Wendy Rainbow Germani shares with us a 1952 photo from Poe Elementary School with these comments "Mike Hill is on the top row far right, Steve [Farson] is just below him, and I am below Steve. Bill Moreland (3rd row up, 3rd from the left) and Brent Arthur (top row far right) were also in our class

Bob Eikel sends along this photo from Poe Elementary School, Kindergarten, 1946. Louie Brazelton, Edwin Hermance, Monroe Luther, and Marsha Cunningham are on the front row. Bryan Miller is in the second row. Linnie Mae Mower and Bob are in the top row. On the far left in the second row you'll find Pat Rankin. Perhaps others can put names to additional faces. Check out the Poe photos below which show these classmates growing up.

Trivial factoids from Bob: "The wooden structure behind us was the bicycle rack. Our teacher was Mrs. English."

Carol Henderson's son Kevin reports (June 6, 2008) that Carol "is in bed resting and wanted me to tell you how much she appreciates the phone calls, cards, and emails.  I have read all of them to her, and once she is able, she will respond to all correspondences from her good friends and family.   I personally would like to thank all of you for the kind thoughts and prayers you have expressed for my mother.  In today's busy world, random acts of kindness seldom occur.  I have also enclosed a couple of pictures of Mom from the Tanglewood days." On June 14, Kevin sent along the collage showing Carol at Lanier; Carol, Kirby, and Lois;  the home on Colquitt; and Judy Fleming and Judy Horton describing his mom as "not one to sit in the stands and watch the Rodeo,  she was down on the bull,  riding for eight seconds."  Carol's health continues to decline.

Peter Vennema sends along this photo and note: "Ran across these pictures in an old file.  Some mothers save everything.  February 8, 1954, at the River Oaks Recreation Center, Mardi Gras costumes.  Linnie Mower as a ballerina (?) with a jeweled mask, Jim Schoonover as the Shiek of Araby, Julie Peyton as perhaps Little Bo Peep, and me as a Wild Man from Borneo.  On top of that mop is a red rubber doggie bone and I believe it kept falling off.  Not exactly PC, but I was only about 13 ½. "

Eleanor Powers Beebe has posted class photos from West University Elementary and Pershing Junior High schools of the January graduating class. Cub scouts at Camp Hudson taken in February 1951 is included.  Check them out!

Charles D. Summers tells a story
"
I was thinking about the Principal, Mrs. Zelda Shumate. She drove that green 1950 Studebaker at a usual speed was between 10-15 mph and could barely see under the steering wheel. She lived down about the 6600 block of Buffalo Speedway.  The police at West University gave her a wide berth when I worked for the Fire Department.

One time [Ernie Dunlop and I] came across a cheap cigar or two (I don't remember which) and decided to have a smoke  after school on the school grounds, so we hid under one of the shacks. We had a pretty good cloud of smoke going when we heard a commotion from inside the classroom. We had thought it was vacant, but a teacher came out with a few others and began to look around underneath. We hid behind the stone supports and were not detected. We must have both been glad that our cigar smoking experiment had ended.

Ernie knew where to go on the roof over the walkway by the library, and the new brick building in the back. I went with him several times after school and we could transverse almost the entire school on the roof.

I thought I'd share those memories."

From Donna Mills Nelson: "Received notice of Patsy Wren’s obituary, and came across this old photo of a first or second grade birthday party at my old house, 2509 Elmen St., in Houston, Texas. Thought her family would enjoy seeing the photo, and since I am in contact with both Sue and Sally, that it would be of interest to them too. I am the third from the left on the top row, with Patsy at my right, Sue is at the far left, kneeling on the ground, and Sally is in front with the purse. Hope all is well with the rest of this group from the past.  Donna"

Ford Smith writes "I was a school mate of Patsy’s from elementary school (Woodrow Wilson) thru Lamar High School. Patsy was a sweet , pretty, and a good friend. Everyone loved Patsy and wanted to be her friend. I didn’t see her at our 50th Class Reunion for she was one of my classmates I wanted to visit. Patsy will be missed by all of us that knew her well."
