Classmate John Phillips recently discovered (by talking to his widow, Lamar '59 overlapping-classmate Kathy MacMahon Smith) that Conrad Michael Smith died in 2012 (July 26, according to the Social Security Death Index). Kathy indicated that she had enjoyed reading the Lamar '58 emails sent to the email address she had shared with Conrad over the years but hadn't realized the class was unaware of his passing until John called to arrange a get-together with Conrad at the 60th.) No obituary, but Kathy has supplied a lot of information about Conrad's career as an engineer (and his 186 IQ), while John (who counted Conrad and Bill Williams among his running buddies) has shared tales of Conrad at Lamar. These will be included in Conrad's In Memoriam entry and in the May update. Please send any memories of Conrad you would like to share with our '58 classmates to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Lamar '58 classmate Bill Williams passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 in Ingram, TX. Cremation was at the Grimes Funeral Home in Kerrville. John Phillips had talked to Bill on the phone while at our 55th Reunion but had never managed an in-person visit; he was determined to see him at the 60th, but .... There was no funeral or memorial service for Bill (whose wife Wincey is deceased), and no obituary, so it's especially important to share your memories of Bill and any information you have about his post-Lamar trajectory with your classmates. (Look for John's story of a close encounter with suspension involving both Bill and Conrad Smith in the May update and in the In Memoriam entry for Bill (currently being prepared).
Our '58 classmate Ronnie Grant passed away Saturday morning, 21 April 2018. I had hoped to visit with Ronnie after the 60th, but when I called his sister-in-law Terry Saturday afternoon to see where Ronnie was in his recovery/rehab/hospice journey I was told he had died that morning. (Obituary and guestbook here.) Ronnie was a frequent contributor of nostalgia and senior humor items to the monthly updates. He was a UT graduate and, with his wife Jan (deceased 2014), very active in cultural and civic affairs in the Clute/Lake Jackson/Surfside/Brazosport area to which he retired after a long career with Houston Light & Power.
A visitation with Ronnie's friends and family was held Wednesday, April 25 and funeral services Thursday, April 26 in Lake Jackson; and interment next to Jan in her family cemetery in Millington, Tennesse Saturday, April 28.
An In Memoriam entry for Ronnie is being prepared; please send any memories of Ronnie you wish to share with your classmates via the In Memoriam entry or a monthly update to email@example.com.
