At Lamar he was Battalion Commander of the R.O.T.C. unit his senior year (the year before our class arrived at Lamar).  As the obituary points out, he went on to become an Aggie through and through, joining the Corps of Cadets and graduating from Texas A & M with a Business Administration degree, followed by six years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army Reserves and many years supporting A & M in various ways.

A visitation was held from 5-7 PM today (Sunday, 6/30) at the Sparkman Funeral Home in Richardson, TX.  (Sorry I didn't see the obituary in time to get this note out before the visitation.)  Funeral services will be heldTOMORROW (Monday, July 1) at 11 AM at the Church of the Holy Communion, 17405 Muirfield Dr. in DALLAS. Interment will be 1:30 PM TUESDAY, July 2, 2019 at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St. in HOUSTON.

A message from Class President Ron Woliver

I am writing to suggest an important project for our class. Lamar is getting an impressive new building on the east side of the campus which will house academic areas, a beautiful swimming pool and many other facilities in four floors. There will be new playing fields sufficient to include sports for boys and girls. More space is available for fields because we have a parking garage. However HISD is not   funding the playing fields sufficiently and the Alumni Assoc is attempting to raise money to provide stadium seating, lights and artificial turf for all fields. David Mafridge (class of 81) is giving $1 million for this effort. Andrew White (Mark’s son) is giving $100,000. Howard Tellepsen has offered to match the first $100,000 in donations. I would like to see our class donate $25,000. If we do, we can have a plaque showing our class at the new swimming pool. I have donated $1,000 and know others who will donate. Give what you can and if we all pitch in we can show our love for the education and fun we had at Lamar. Please send your donation to Fran Callahan, Lamar High School 3325 Westheimer, Houston 77098. The checks should be made to Lamar Alumni Assoc, and please put 1958 in Memo field of the check. Thanks

We have just lost the Vice President and Most Popular Girl of the Class of 1958.
Larry Freeman informs us of the passing of our Lamar '58 classmate Mary Sue Hanks Reuther on May 28, 2019 at her residence in Hamilton, Ohio. (Obituary and Condolences at  https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dayton/obituary.aspx?pid=193033336).

Mary Sue appears on a dozen pages of the 1958 Orenda, as necessitated by her long list of activities and honors at Lamar. She also was in my homeroom (along with a lot of other H's), a frequent math-class study buddy, and just as perpetually cheerful as her Orenda pictures suggest.

As her obituary details, Mary Sue's post-Lamar trajectory included earning a Ph.D. in Romance Languages at the University of Missouri and serving as an Associate Professor in the Spanish and Portugese department at Miami University of Ohio for 10 years before making the obvious career switch to the ministry within the United Methodist Church. Larry Freeman reports that Mary Sue attended SMU before going on to graduate school in Oxford.

A visitation with family and a Mass of Christian Burial were held for Mary Sue June 3rd at St. Mary Catholic Church in Oxford, Ohio.

If you have memories of Mary Sue at, before, or after Lamar, please share them with your '58 classmates by sending them to me or to louise@lorober.com for inclusion in the July update and in Mary Sue's In Memoriam entry on the website.
