At Lamar Lynn was a member of the Sophomore Cabinet, president of Niwuana, secretary of Kachina, secretary-treasurer of the Cartoonists Association, Girls' Sports Editor of the Lancer, and a member of CSU, the National Thespian Society (including being a member of the team that won State in the one-act-play competition), and Quill and Scroll. Her obituary also mentions that she was a Duchess in the May Fete. Plenty of opportunities for Lamar '58 classmates to have known and/or been mentored by her. Subsequent to Lamar, Carol majored in Journalism at Baylor, where she also was VP of her sorority and was on the editorial board of the Baylor newspaper. A visitation and a celebration of her life were held in Houston on December 27 and 28, respectively.

From her twin brother, John Willard Garrett, II:
"Friends, It is unfortunate that I have to bring news that Joan Elaine Garrett passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017. She had been affected by kidney failure this last year and put up a vigorous defense against the disease. She fought until the last few days when she passed away in her sleep at home in Houston with her cat "Kitty". She looked forward to returning to Houston after being unable to tolerate her dialysis treatments in Keller, TX. She had postponed her treatment in Houston many, many times and this is the reason for her deciding to come to Keller on her own when she knew that a very nice facility was waiting for her. She had a tough time adjusting to the dialysis treatments. She had always been an independent person and had her mental capacity to make her own medical decisions, even after coming to Keller It came to a point that she had to do something and she tried. She had her fighting spirit to the end. She graduated from Lamar HS in Houston, TX - Class of 1958, she graduated from University of Houston with a teachers certificate, and obtained Master of Library Science degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. We will always miss Joan." An obituary and guest book for Joan can be found here. A memorial service was held for her in Houston Saturday, December 2. I'm sorry to have to relate that our overlapping-classmate, Richard Dana Steigerwald (Lamar '57) "passed away from natural causes at Solera of West Houston on November 22, 2017" (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle/obituary.aspx?n=richard-steigerwald&pid=187474018&fhid=16975). Those of you who ran track or were on the "B" and/or "A" football teams or were members of Pow Wow are especially likely to have known and/or to have been mentored by Dana. As his obituary informs us, after Lamar Dana attended the University of the South in Tennessee on a football scholarship and graduated from Sam Houston State (Huntsville). He maintained a private practice as a CPA in Houston for 27 years.
A memorial service will be held for Dana at 11 AM this coming Friday, December 15 at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy, TX. |
