A message from Class President Ron Woliver

I am writing to suggest an important project for our class. Lamar is getting an impressive new building on the east side of the campus which will house academic areas, a beautiful swimming pool and many other facilities in four floors. There will be new playing fields sufficient to include sports for boys and girls. More space is available for fields because we have a parking garage. However HISD is not   funding the playing fields sufficiently and the Alumni Assoc is attempting to raise money to provide stadium seating, lights and artificial turf for all fields. David Mafridge (class of 81) is giving $1 million for this effort. Andrew White (Mark’s son) is giving $100,000. Howard Tellepsen has offered to match the first $100,000 in donations. I would like to see our class donate $25,000. If we do, we can have a plaque showing our class at the new swimming pool. I have donated $1,000 and know others who will donate. Give what you can and if we all pitch in we can show our love for the education and fun we had at Lamar. Please send your donation to Fran Callahan, Lamar High School 3325 Westheimer, Houston 77098. The checks should be made to Lamar Alumni Assoc, and please put 1958 in Memo field of the check. Thanks

From Gus Comiskey:
The Lamar High School Alumni Association will provide a tour of the school starting at 11 AM.

Please park in the west parking lot, immediately adjacent to the auditorium.

Join us in the auditorium for an update on the status of the school and the new construction (Approx $100 mil cost to HISD).

The tour will be confined to the first floor, although all floors will be open for individual touring.

James Coney Island, provided by Ron Woliver, will be served in the new cafeteria, following the tour.

MEMORANDUM

FROM: Gus Comiskey

RE: 60th Reunion Party - April 21, 2018 (Saturday)
__________________________________________________________

We're planning on having a fun weekend, with a lot of good memories, and want you to put the date/s on your schedule.

The big party is Saturday nite, April 21, 6:30 PM, at the Forest Club on Memorial, in Houston. We'll be sending you more info, but want you to get it on your schedule. Early estimate of the cost is about $65/person.

Additionally, at noon on Saturday, at Lamar, Ron Woliver is again hosting lunch, served by the popular James Coney Island, and there will be tours of Lamar, which is undergoing $100 million of HISD changes and upgrades.

We are hoping to have a golf tournament at Memorial Park Friday afternoon, April 20, following by a very informal get together at Beck's Prime, at the Memorial Park golf course. This part is in the planning process - as is the whole weekend.

Our goal is to have several planned events, but to give you time to be with old friends, and just have a great time.

You will receive a formal invitation, but it is important to the planning committee for you to get this on your schedule.

Feel free to call me, should you want to ask questions, make suggestions, etc. My cell is
713-825-1106.

Redskins" No More - Thus Spake HISD

On April 15, 2014 Kerry Shawell sent me the following note: "Lamar Texans - No more Indians." I didn't know whether this was just Kerry's suggestion. Then Sally Mills Watkins shared with your lazy correspondent (me, and of course you, too via this update) a link to the Houston Chronicle report. As indicated in the article, the Houston Independent School District announced Tuesday, the 15th of April, that the Lamar High School mascot will henceforth be the Texans. (Two other Houston high schools and one middle school had their "culturally insensitive" mascot names changed, too.) Dare we hope that this settles the issue?
