I am writing to suggest an important project for our class. Lamar is getting an impressive new building on the east side of the campus which will house academic areas, a beautiful swimming pool and many other facilities in four floors. There will be new playing fields sufficient to include sports for boys and girls. More space is available for fields because we have a parking garage. However HISD is not funding the playing fields sufficiently and the Alumni Assoc is attempting to raise money to provide stadium seating, lights and artificial turf for all fields. David Mafridge (class of 81) is giving $1 million for this effort. Andrew White (Mark’s son) is giving $100,000. Howard Tellepsen has offered to match the first $100,000 in donations. I would like to see our class donate $25,000. If we do, we can have a plaque showing our class at the new swimming pool. I have donated $1,000 and know others who will donate. Give what you can and if we all pitch in we can show our love for the education and fun we had at Lamar. Please send your donation to Fran Callahan, Lamar High School 3325 Westheimer, Houston 77098. The checks should be made to Lamar Alumni Assoc, and please put 1958 in Memo field of the check. Thanks

Our class has a fund of about $20,000 for Hope Scholarships at Lamar which has funded scholarships ($2,000 a year) for at risks who are generally B students. Several scholarships were given this year and we are giving $500 from the 1958 fund to two students who just graduated:
Ashton Wells. She transferred to Lamar from a small town and was a foster child. She was a cheer captain and student council secretary and had apart-time job. She graduated early and with all of her challenges she stated in her application: "I knew that there was something greater out there than this. I just had to work for it." J'Marcus Williams. He lives with foster parents. He will be the first in his family to attend college. He had a good sense of humor in his interview which will serve him well. He raised a goat in the Lamar FFA. He worked part-time at KFC and Taco Bell. We want to increase our 1958 fund to help at risk students and would appreciate your considering a contribution by sending a check to Lamar High School Alumni Association, 3325 Wertheimer, Houston, Texas 77098. Put "1958 Hope Scholarships" on the check. This is a 5o1(c)(3). Ron Woliver Ellen Dillingham Heemer David Redford Calling all Wilson Elementary alumni among you (or elsewhere): You may recall that back in June you were asked to help raise money to renew the playground at Wilson. Within a few hours of that note going out half a dozen of you had responded. Thanks! Mark White (Lamar '58) now reports that “The school, neighbors, Parks Board and alums are in the final stages of raising money to complete the newly designed play ground or wonderground as it is styled.” A reception for Wilson Elementary graduates is planned for April 26, 2012 and Mark would like all you Wilson alumni out there to send him your postal and/or email address so that you can be formally invited to that reception. You can send your contact information directly to Mark at mwhite@geovox.com. For more information on the project, including drawings and descriptions of the planned renovations, see http://wilsonspark.org/p/WilsonWonderGroundSparkPark.pdf . Don't miss out on the chance for a reunion with your fellow Wilson graduates.
