I'm sorry to report that our overlapping-classmate John Brent (Lamar '60) died " peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 16, 2018, following a long battle with cancer and recent complication from a stroke" (obituary and guestbook at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle/obituary.aspx?n=john-brent&pid=188473927&fhid=6290).
As a sophomore (i.e., our senior year) John was a member of the golf team. By the time his senior year rolled around, the '60 Orenda recounts that he had been involved in National Honor Society; Student Council; Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Cabinets; "A" Team Golf, lettering all 3 years; and Irari, serving as Social Chairman his junior and senior years. After Lamar he earned a Mathematics degree from UT-Austin and then had a long career as a real estate developer and was "an avid sportsman", combining the two in transforming an overgrown ranch into an award-winning (e.g., Texas Wildlife Society's Land Stewardship Award) "premier South Texas Hunting Property".
A memorial mass will be held for John at 2 PM TUESDAY, MARCH 20 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Road in Houston, with interment (in a family-only gathering) at Glenwood Cemetery.
